FIRE SAFETY
Wildfire preparedness is a shared responsibility. MCCNA is working toward recognition as a Firewise USA® community, bringing neighbors together to reduce wildfire risks, improve emergency preparedness, and make our neighborhood more resilient.

MCCNA’s Firewise Initiative
MCCNA is working toward recognition as a Firewise USA® community. Firewise USA is a national program that provides a framework for neighbors to work together to reduce wildfire risks and improve the ability of homes and communities to survive a wildfire.
Our effort includes assessing wildfire risks throughout the neighborhood and developing a three-year risk-reduction action plan. Important components include providing wildfire-safety education, evacuation planning and practice, and documenting the mitigation work residents are already doing around their homes. Firewise communities can also apply for grant funding to pay for risk-reduction projects.
Protect Your Home
Homes can be made more resistant to wildfire by reducing the places where wind-blown embers can ignite combustible materials. Keep roofs and gutters clear of combustible debris, use ember-resistant vents, reduce combustible materials next to the home, and pay particular attention to decks, fences and other features that can provide a path for fire to reach the structure.
Fire Safe Marin provides detailed guidance on home hardening and the steps homeowners can take to reduce structural vulnerabilities.
Create Defensible Space
Defensible space reduces the vegetation and other combustible materials that can carry wildfire toward a home. Maintaining this space also gives firefighters a safer area in which to defend structures.
Pay particular attention to the area immediately surrounding the home, remove dead vegetation and accumulated debris, separate plants and other fuels, trim trees and shrubs, and prevent vegetation from creating a continuous path for fire. Fire Safe Marin provides detailed guidance for maintaining defensible space and the different zones around your home.
Be Ready to Evacuate
Wildfires can change rapidly, so preparation before an emergency is essential. Know your evacuation zone, sign up for AlertMarin, and make sure everyone in your household knows how you will communicate and where you will go if an evacuation is ordered. Get our neighborhood Area Zone Map – HERE.
Prepare a go-bag with essential medications, documents and supplies; plan for pets and anyone who may need assistance; and keep your vehicle ready to leave. During an emergency, always follow evacuation instructions from public safety officials.
Wildfire Risk Home Assessments
A wildfire risk home assessment can identify vulnerabilities that may not be obvious and provide practical recommendations for reducing them. Assessments consider both the structure and surrounding property, including vegetation, roofs and gutters, vents, decks, fences and other potential pathways for wildfire and embers.
MCCNA encourages every household to request an assessment and address identified risks as circumstances permit. Use the REQUEST NOW button above to get started.
Firewise USA® & MCCNA
Firewise USA® is a national recognition program that helps communities organize and work together to reduce wildfire risk. Recognition is based on community participation and ongoing wildfire preparedness—not on every property being free of wildfire hazards.
MCCNA’s Firewise effort includes a community wildfire risk assessment, a three-year action plan, ongoing resident education and an annual investment in wildfire risk reduction. Residents help us document that investment by logging the time and money they spend on qualifying mitigation work around their properties.
Use the LOG YOUR WORK button above whenever you complete wildfire mitigation work. MCCNA will aggregate resident activity for our annual Firewise reporting.
